DVB-T

Digital terrestrial television in Europe and much of the rest of the world is dominated by the universal success of DVB-T as a standard for delivering content to consumers. Free-to-air, pay-TV, a mix of both and even hybrid DVB-T/IPTV services are all being adopted. However, in most countries terrestrial TV is frequency constrained and always bandwidth constrained until countries drive through analogue switch-off around 2010 for many. Service quality and compression efficiency are essential in meeting national broadcasters expectations and achieving the maximal use of the bandwidth available. Statistical VBR encoding in MPEG-2 and/or MPEG-4 AVC is paramount to achieve this goal in constrained bandwidth that is often itself traded against signal penetration and robustness.

One of the most challenging decisions for DVB-T operators is the codec choice: MPEG-2 and the low cost reception devices available, or MPEG-4 AVC for a significant increase in bandwidth efficiency and amount of services delivered. Certainly, HD services will demand MPEG-4 AVC compression for terrestrial delivery. TANDBERG Television's compression solutions have always allowed upgrade paths enabling operators to migrate from MPEG-2 SD, through to MPEG-4 AVC HD within the same encoder chassis.

TANDBERG Television are the industry leaders in enabling DVB-T for operators, from the simplest to the worlds most complex regional systems. It is this position of strength that has given TANDBERG Television the insight to drive the most efficient solutions for terrestrial operators as well as enable the future. The phased release of frequency spectrum will be in great demand from licensed HD and mobile TV services as well as potentially pure data delivery.

TANDBERG Television can advise and consult on the best approaches for all services in terrestrial from the mobile small screen to the HD game on the big screen. The hybrid approach with consumer devices having both terrestrial and Ethernet reception ports brings on-demand, broadband data, telephony, and interactive services to-life. IPTV solutions for broadcast and on-demand are equally well served by TANDBERG Television.
